Deep Purple - History Hits & Highlights '68-'75

freebieA glorious overview of the classic MkI-MkIV Deep Purple years. Stuffed full of interviews with the people that matter and plenty of live footage too, this is a big heavy rock dinner that totally satisfies.
Every major Purp's number is on this including a stinging version of Highway Star and a manic Speed King from the MkII line-up.
With excerpts from rare New Zealand, French and German TV shows and even a Leeds Polytechnic student project from 1974, this is the most comprehensive appraisal of the band and at over four hours, its real 6 pints and a pizza job.

287 minutes of riff-a-rama

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Live At Montreux

freebieThis is compiled from live shows in 1974 and 1984. For lovers of jazz-rock there can be no finer sight than John McLaughlin tearing a blizzard of notes out of his guitar, while a stellar rhythm section effortlessly whacks out a complex, wonky time signature. At times you have to laugh out loud at it because the level of musicianship is simply so incredible. Interestingly, the '74 footage shows a wild band, almost out-stretching their equipment's ability to deliver the music. By '84 the sound is much more polished as technology in amplification and pick-ups had immeasurably improved. All stunning stuff.

234 minutes of brrr-drrrd-biddle-biddle-diddly-ding.

The Black Crowes - Freak n Roll...Into The Fog

freebieA live set from one of the finest purveyors of rock n roll soul this side of the early 70s. Every incarnation of the Crowes has always possessed that louche, low-slung swagger so crucial for organic rock n roll to flourish. Here, in front of a sold out crowd at the FIllmore in San Francisco, they cruise through 19 numbers including a hard-bitten Sting Me, a muscular Remedy and the always wistful She Talks To Angels - one of their finest lyrics. They end proceedings with a rambunctious version of The Band's The Night THey Drove Old Dixie Down. One of those gigs which, though great on the DVD, you still wish you had been there.

150 minutes of being stung right down to your dirty bones.

Knebworth 1990

freebieThis was a festival gig in Knebworth Park in aid of the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre. Three hours of high-end mainstream rock awaits you on this one.
You get Tears For Fears, Cliff Richard and Elton John, all of which you can skim. But then we get to the serious stuff with a storming Genesis set, a four number section from Robert Plant with Pagey guesting on Rock n Roll and a Gilmour led Pink Floyd wraps it up with Shine On you Crazy Diamond and Run Like Hell. All tasty stuff. With additional numbers by Dire Straits, Status Quo, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton, you can't go wrong.

180 minutes of songs you know.

Jethro Tull - Live At Montreux

freebieA 2003 show which is a lovely mix of an acoustic set and a cranked up electric set. Ian Anderson is on fine one-legged form as we hurtle through a lot of their classic and some superb newer songs too. Stand-outs are the always evocative Bouree, a saucy Hunting Girl and the driving finale of Locomotive Breath.
God bless Tull. There's been no-one before or since like them. A peerless band of absolute class.

117 minutes of flutey wonderfulness.

Cream - Disraeli Gears

freebieThis is one of the Classic Album series - which is on TV all the time in UK but may not have bene seen elsewhere. Top quality entertainment it is though, which benefits from half an hour of previously unseen live footage. Everyone involves gives engaging accounts on how this classic rock album was created. Then there's the music. A powerhouse blend of blues, hard rock and psychedelics that actually is still, 42 years later, quite shockingly brilliant,

82 minutes of multi-coloured blues and perms.

Supershow - The Last Great Jam Of The 60s

freebieThere's been a bootlegs of this around since it happened in 1969 and I seem to recall it had a limited cinema release. Essentialy its a series of jammed songs performed by various combinations of Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Steve Stills, Jack Bruce, Buddy Miles, Collosseum, Roland Kirk and The Modern Jazz Quartet. There are excellent version of Crosswords and Stormy Monday and its good to see Jon Hiseman's pioneering jazz-rock band playing live. As with all jam-sessions, there are good bits and other bits where you're waiting for it to take off but this is a fascinsating period piece recorded live in a warehouse a mere 40 years ago.

70 minutes of bluesy history.

The Allman Brothers Band - Live At The Beacon Theatre

freebieIn recent years, The Allman's run of shows in New York at the Beacon have become the stuff of legend. This show was recorded across two shows in 2003. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are two of my favourite guitarists out there and of course, they have a wonderful back catalog of ABB music to draw on. None of it isn't brilliant, from the opening Aint Wastin' Time No More to the encore of One Way Out, this is proper rock music, played by proper rock musicians. Gregg's vocals are as gravelly and soulful as you'd want - especially on the magnificent classic Midnight Rider. Stunning, powerful, emotional music for grown-ups.

170 minutes of soulshine
