Gig Posters

Gig Posters
John Nicholson|

We have all had our lives shaped by gigs. Whether it was seeing Zeppelin at Knebworth or  Steely Dan in Edinburgh or The Who in Newcastle, these were significant days in my life. We still meet up with people we knew 45 or 50 years ago and inevitably we’ll start talking about music and gigs we went to.

So I thought that t-shirts which feature gig advertisements would be a good way to connect to the past and to great nights, even if you didn’t go to the show and they’d evoke the golden days of the screen printed single colour posters that we all grew up with.

Schaefer Music Festival

Gigs ran from 1967 to 1976 and were held at Wollman Rink in Central Park. Sponsored by Schaefer Beer, it was famous for hosting legendary, diverse lineups for incredibly cheap ticket prices (often just $1 or $2). Virtually everyone played it, from Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac.

Taste

They played Mothers in Birmingham on 3rd May 1970 and a lot of gig posters around this time were simple single colours.

Blind Faith

A more elaborate poster for their July 12th 1969 Madison Square Garden gig with Delaney & Bonnie and Free. It was actually the very first date of their debut US tour even before their album had been released.

Cream

13th January 1967. The original contract for this gig actually surfaced at a Bonhams auction a few years back. The Robert Stigwood Organisation booked the band to play the Guildhall for a grand total fee of £200 which was about £3,700 - £4,000. Not bad!

Curved Air. 30th/31st May 1976. Wat a triple bill. Of course punk rock and the obsession with the fashion of it made things like this extinct

Derek And The Dominos

Their last show in America and their penultimate ever December 5, 1970, at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The very next night, December 6, 1970, they played their final gig ever at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, New York.
