...no it's not, it's just a sample

...no it's not, it's just a sample

We were in a bar in Newcastle on Monday. They were playing an eclectic selection of music. One modern song came on and it sampled Spirit's Fresh Garbage. I bet most people don’t realise. At first I was surprised to hear the band played in a bar but then I realised it was just a sample and my heart sank. Fresh garbage indeed!

And that feeling led me to think there should be a German word to describe the feeling of disappointed recognition.

Because it happens all the time. It's like with that Janet Jackson song which opens with Ventura Highway by America which I love and I’m always disappointed.

Kanye West, not, it might surprise you, on my playlist, does this all the time, using 21st Century Schizoid Man and Iron Man. Long Red by Mountain, 1972 is used on 99 Problems Jay-Z is another and on the rare occasions I hear it, it feels like someone has kidnapped a friend.

Even ones like Kashmir on Come With Me by Diddy ft. Jimmy Page, which was recorded with Page’s participation, seems disappointing when you realise it's not the original.

That sinking feeling when you realise its not the original deserves a term like schadenfraude

Something called Pimp C uses Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’. Samples are everywhere. The drums, like on When The Levee Breaks, have obviously been used many times and James Brown’s Funky Drummer. I heard the Money cash register and bass line used the other day. I suppose there’s so much music, maybe they think why make up any more? Fair enough but the effect on all of us who love the chopped up original isn’t considered. And I was thinking as I heard Fresh Garbage that I could think of hundreds of obscure songs with interesting riffs or effects. These people need a classic rock aficionado on board to trawl old albums.

On second thoughts, no they don’t. The last thing I want is more disappointment!
