RIP Dave Mason

RIP Dave Mason
John Nicholson|

These days aren’t easy because it involves confronting your own mortality. Dave Mason’s music with Traffic and solo was, for many years, a great comfort to me. The album Alone Together remains one of my top 10 records. Songs like ‘Shouldn’t Have Given More Than You Gave’. ‘Only You Know and I Know’ Sad And Deep As You', Look At You, Look At Me 'really spoke to me.

His ‘Certified Live’ album was a school favourite. I took it in to play many times and was delighted because no one knew who the great guitarist was. He flew under the UK’s radar in those years.

I lost touch with his output in the early 80s but he was still out there touring, having moved to America. His music, especially in the first half of the 70s, really evokes that singer/songwriter period. The live records, along with ‘It’s Like You Never Left’ and ‘Headkeeper’ are especially good but the debut is the essential record and was his gift to the world and his great legacy
