The Allman Brothers - Those early singles really rock...
Authored By John Nicholson

The Allman Brothers are a brilliant band and one which I collect. I have all the vinyl albums and plenty, though not all, of the singles, especially from the 1970s. Perhaps surprisingly, they were successful on the Billboard 100 on a frequent basis with 12 charting between 1970 and 1981. But in the UK, they were much less successful, which seems an aberration now. But they didn’t chart a single and only Brothers And Sisters charted at #42l
The albums are not hard to come by, though UK copies of the first two are hard to find without paying substantial cash. Because the singles never sold in the UK, I rarely see them and they’re expensive when I do (approx at least £15)
Black Hearted Woman / Every Hungry Woman. Is the first UK release on ATCO and one of my faves. I have a German picture sleeve version of Revival/Leave My Blues At Home. My copy of Midnight Rider / Whipping Post is a UK copy on red Atlantic. Ain't Wastin' Time No More / Melissa is a USA copy and wasn’t released in the UK. Musically it’s my favourite single, the A-side has so much space and is wonderfully world weary. The B-side is so melodic. Just a perfect love song.
Jessica was released and re-released in the UK several times, my copy is the first issue. Gets airplay in the UK because it's the Top Gear theme. Never charted though. I find that hard to believe because it’s always on.
Ramblin’ Man was a hit in America and then things get more obscure. Louisiana Lou and Three Card Monty John was a USA 1975 release and then there was a four year hiatus to 1979’s Crazy Love. There are a couple more in the early 80s but then a break of nine years to 1990 and Seven Turns which is triumphant and an edited German promo. And there’s a couple more but that’s it.
They didn’t release any singles or 12” singles with non-album stuff on, more’s the pity but those early singles really rock.
