March 7, 1966: Brian Wilson released "Caroline, No." While it appeared on the legendary Pet Sounds album, it was actually released as his first-ever solo single. On that same day, Tina Turner was in the studio recording the powerhouse vocals for "River Deep – Mountain High.

1970 Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It would stay there for 10 weeks, becoming the defining album of the year just as the duo was privately falling apart.

1976: Elton John became the first rock star since The Beatles to be immortalized in wax at Madame Tussauds in London.

The Beatles were in the studio working on Sgt. Pepper’s. While the album is famous, the specific "instrument" they used this week is obscure: for the track "Lovely Rita," they created a strange, buzzing percussive sound by blowing through combs covered in government-issue toilet paper.

March 12.1971 The Pretty Things raw, gritty debut arrived.

David Bowie’s Young Americans is released.

1965.The Beatles began a two-week run at No. 1 with "Eight Days a Week." Meanwhile, ihe Rolling Stones were fined £5 each for "insulting behavior" at a petrol station in East London after being refused the use of the toilet. They reportedly chanted, "We'll piss anywhere!" while doing exactly that against the wall.

This week in 1967, a band called Art (which featured future Spooky Tooth members) was promoting their only album, Supernatural Fairy Tales. It is a "Holy Grail" for psych-rock collectors—heavy, murky, and strange. If you ever come across it, it’s a perfect example of the transition from 1966 pop to 1967's heavy psychedelia.
