Life Has Fallen Apart

Life Has Fallen Apart
John Nicholson|

You don’t realise how important your address is to your identity and when you can’t prove it, everything falls apart. That’s the position we’re in. When anyone asks for proof of identity, I have no official documents/bills/council tax to prove it. We just haven’t been sent any yet, despite registering with the council etc. So we’re stuck. Shopify requires identity verification in 2 weeks or will suspend its payments facility but I can’t give them any. It’s all registered to the old address. And any time we have to explain this, it just feels like we’re trying to pull off a scam of some sort.

It doesn’t help that we haven't had a single bit of redirected mail despite having one in place. it seems to have not been implemented. Why can’t they get it right? I booked it on 3rd March. Screw ups like this just make life so difficult and prevent you getting on with anything. It feels impenetrable and I can't imagine it all being sorted. Everything gets so complicated. The Council Tax bill is the most important that seems to be accepted as identity proof by everyone. You’d think they’d send one asap wouldn’t you? They’re being very slow though. I've even told HMRC and they’ve not written either, even though I owe them money. It feels like everything has just stopped.

I didn’t realise how we’d set up a massive network at the previous place that needed to be unwound and recreated here. If I can't give Shopify what they need we’ll have to trade using only Paypal. It’s all such a pain and shatters your peace of mind. So far I’ve changed 18 addresses at different organisations. We have started getting Amazon deliveries and Couriers seem to find us but you lose faith that anything will work properly after a while. I expect everything to go wrong at all times because it so often does. For example the delivery of the broadband modem has been delayed by DPD. What’s the betting it doesn't arrive before the engineer and they can't complete installation on Tuesday

We've already had Openreach go to the wrong address. When they called me to say so, they couldn't just walk 100 metres down the road and install it, oh no, that’d be too easy. The whole thing has to be abandoned and rebooked which was supposed to happen on Tuesday except the BT worker that told me it was booked, didn’t actually book it, leaving another colleague mystified as to why not? I booked Zen Internet instead of BT in the hope of better service but I am forever cynical.

Then, in trying to shut the water off to change taps, an old valve broke and jammed shut so hot water ran out and we had to get a plumber to fix it. It goes on and on. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong at the moment and it's driving us mad. Even the delivery of bins was held up, then fractured, and only happened correctly because I intercepted the guy delivering them to get the full compliment.

On top of this we lost the bank card and pinsentry so have had to cancel it and order another. Which means all subscriptions will fail. I’ll just wait for the ‘failed’ emails and update them as they arrive, hopefully none will before a new card arrives.A new one is supposed to be here by Monday but it wouldn’t surprise me if it goes missing or the new pin does.

I ache for more simple, less suspicious days when you didn’t have to prove to everyone who you are . I would genuinely like to employ someone to do life’s admin but you can’t hire someone to prove who you are obviously. I just want a simple life but it seems very unsimple to achieve

With this complete shitshow going on, it's impossible to get down to any business. Our heads are all over the place. Are we uniquely cursed or do these problems happen to everyone?
