I knew nothing of Three Dog Night for years. They were an American irrelevance and I thought of them, disparagingly, as pop music. The band had 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, and 13 consecutive US charting albums, with three number one singles. Though they continue to tour in some incarnation, I think of them from the late 60s to mid-70s. I really only knew them from Mama Told Me Not To Come and Joy To The World, their only two UK hits. The former hinted to me at a world and scene that was very adult to me at 14.
