The group was born after a chance meeting in Cleveland between Stills and Chris Hillman (formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers). Stills was looking for a new direction following the breakup of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
The core lineup consisted of:
Stephen Stills: Vocals, guitar, keyboards, Chris Hillman: Vocals, guitar, mandolin, Al Perkins:Pedal steel guitar, guitar, Dallas Taylor:Drums ,Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuel: Bass, Paul Harris: Keyboards, Joe Lala: Percussion
The band's name came from a photo shoot at the train station in Manassas, Virginia, the site of two major American Civil War battles, reflecting Stills' personal interest in history.
