Steve Winwood is probably more known for his keyboard work and singing than guitar but he is an excellent player. A standout moment for me is on 1973’s Traffic On The Road live album on the track Sometimes I Feel So Uninspired where he gets a chance to stretch out. But you can hear him on the Blind Faith album - he’s the fella not obviously Eric Clapton. I love his work, often acoustic, on the wonderful John Barleycorn album too.
His first solo album contains some subtle and melodic playing. Far from just being a scales player, he crafts his solos in unexpected ways, the opposite of slick in a similar way to Jerry Garcia in the Grateful Dead (who loved Traffic)
Definitely not so much underrated as a guitarist as all too often ignored. Our shirt was designed from a 1973 photo taken in Hamburg, probably actually on the On The Road tour
