Mick Box - part of some great music
John Nicholson|

One of the UK’s rock stalwarts and Uriah Heep’s only constant member, Mick Box has been part of some great music since 1970. It seems barely credible that I saw him at Newcastle City Hall 50 long years ago and he’s been working ever since, only now do they seem to be laying Heep to rest.

Again, Mick is rarely mentioned in dispatches when it comes to great guitarists but there are few whose career has embraced so many different styles and contexts. I especially like the early 70s work but also the early 80s shift to a more AOR sound. My absolute favourite is Demons And Wizards which I think is the apotheosis of early Heep’s work.

Given they were so loud when I saw them that as soon as he hit the first chords, the air in the city hall moved across us like a stiff breeze, I'm surprised he’s not gone deaf.

This photo we worked on was taken in Oslo, I should think it's somewhere between 1973-76. Great hair too.
