This week sees me getting quotes from removals firms for shifting our stuff from here to Montrose. Until you have to break it down into boxes you don't really conceive of the sheer volume, even though we have sold/donated, junked massive piles of stuff.
Andy has taken all the records into the shop so we won’t have to pay to shift them but apart from that, we think we haven't got much beyond beds and white goods. Even so, quotes range from $800 to £3,300! I suspect we'll end up paying around £1700. In fact the whole business of moving is one great money pit. Everyone takes a bite out of you. Lawyers, financial advisors, tax, estate agents. It’ll cost us 10 grand! Still, at least we won’t have a monthly mortgage payment once we’ve moved, that’ll make a big difference.
The biggest task we face is emptying out the loft. Its technical name is junk. Disposing of junk is hard work and involves several trips to the recycling centre. The instinct is ‘I might want that’ but you’ve got to resist it. I’ve not seen anything in there for at least six years so I obviously have no use for it.
It’s a strange experience picking up your life and taking it somewhere else. Exciting and intimidating. I think we want it to be the start of a new approach, not the continuation of living here. It’s pretty much a blank canvas there so we can start afresh. We’re not inheriting anyone’s taste as no one has lived there for many years.
It feels like a huge task to achieve and I can hardly believe we're going to actually do it in just over 3 weeks.
