Things You Used To Do

Things You Used To Do
John Nicholson|

Remember standing at a bar and leaning over three people holding a fiver and ordering 3 pints and having to try and lift them, held together precariously over people’s heads without soaking them. That was typical of every Friday or Saturday.

Sleeping on the streets in a rancid sleeping bag in a queue to buy tickets to a popular band, while hoping the good-looking girl in front of you might fall asleep in your lap, it meant it was like she’’s in your bedroom, right, and feeling quiet rage at someone turning up in the morning having had a mate sleep out and jump the queue.

Waiting at the stage door for the band to come out and maybe get an autograph but more just to briefly be close to rock n roll.

Looking persistently at a girl in a club or pub until her friend noticed you and told her friend that the long-haired lad in patchy jeans and a rugby shirt fancied her.

Headbanging down the front in the crush at a gig or with a crowd of like-minds at a rock disco.

Throwing up six pints of snakebite in the toilets because you thought drinking them would impress her and make you look hard.

Drinking cans of Skol lager and playing UFO singles before going out for the night (that might just have been me)

Arguing that Depeche Mode were musically and morally inferior to Bob Seger ( might also have just been me)

Leaning over to the bloke next to you in a record shop and recommending an album he’d picked out of the racks (“great record, that, mate”)

Going with your mate who could play guitar to a music shop for the reflective glory of sitting on an amp while he played All Along The Watchtower.

Your evening meal being Ryvitas and Marmite.

Your jeans being so tight, they dug into your hips and left bruises.

Trying to walk in cowboy boots in as elegant a way possible

Standing outside the city hall listening to the band soundcheck.

Getting your mother to sew patches on your jeans even when they didn’t have any holes and especially band patches onto your denim jacket

That time you thought, as a bloke, that eyeliner was a good idea.

Trying to impress a girl with your most obscure album.

Unselfconsciously pissing into an empty pop bottle at a festival.

Putting an obscure b-side on the jukebox and looking around to see if anyone noticed.

Freaking out to the only rock song played at a school disco and being sent to the deputy head’s office for doing so.

Buying what were called hamburgers from a dodgy, unhygienic van outside of a gig.
