Currently playing in Liga de Expansión M,X a Mexican semi-professional football league founded in 2020 as part of the Mexican Football Federation's "Stabilization Project", which has the primary objective of rescuing the financially troubled teams from the Ascenso MX and prevent the disappearance of a second-tier league in Mexico, for which there will be no promotion and relegation during the following six seasons. The project also attempts for Liga MX and former Ascenso MX teams to consolidate stable projects with strong administration, finances, and infrastructure.
The Universidad de Guadalajara football club, nicknamed Leones Negros (Black Lions), was founded on August 19, 1970, and started in the Tercera División (third division) in the Mexican professional league. By the mi 70s they'd got into the top division and were
runner-up in 1975–76, 1976–77, 1989–90 before "alleged questionable financial dealings" knacked them.
