The Schaefer Music Festival T-Shirt

Please Choose Your Correct Size

We have introduced a handling fee of £5 for returns, which will be deducted from your refund. All our shirts are printed to order, so it means we have a lot of wasted stock when we make a size exchange, or if someone orders two sizes in order to return one.
So please choose your correct size.

If you live in New York and are of a certain age, you will likely fondly remember the Schaefer Music Festival gigs which ran from 1967 to 1976 and were held at Wollman Rink in Central Park. This is the t-shirt they produced for the 1976 shows.

The first was held in 1967, sponsored by Rheingold Breweries and was just two shows. July 5: The Young Rascals; The Jimi Hendrix Experience; Len Chandler and July 7 when Phil Oches played. But in 1968 the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company took over the sponsorship, guaranteed to make up the $200,000 difference between costs and $1 ticket sales

This was the sort of sponsorship deal that we rarely see any more. Basically, the aim was to make tickets really cheap at just a dollar. Today it is more typical to try and maximise revenue, isn’t it? Those were more egalitarian days. Schafer surely knew that being associated with a groovy scene and not looking like The Man trying to screw every last drop of cash out of people, would be good for the company in the long run.

Club owner and musician Hilly Kristal co-founded the series with producer and concert promoter Ron Delsener and in 1968 between 24th June and August 24th put on 30 shows that featured jazz, blues, folk and rock acts. Some of the more notable shows were June 29: Moby Grape with Muddy Waters, July 24: Vanilla Fudge and Ultimate Spinach (sounds like two items from a menu) August 3: Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention with Buddy Guy August 19: Traffic with Tim Buckley.

It seems incredible that about 7,000 people would pay just a buck for such gigs. No wonder the series was popular with quality acts like that on the bill. So in 1969 from 16th June to 23rd August they hosted 34 shows. Led Zeppelin on 21st July with BB King! July 16: Ten Years After; Fleetwood Mac and Spencer Davis Group played on a cracking triple headed Brit bill.

And so it continued every year with 30 or more shows featuring everyone who was anyone in rock n roll. Looking at the lists I think only the Rolling Stones and latterly Wings are missing from the big rock acts of the day to play.

The last shows were by Crosby & Nash in September 1976. By then tickets were $3 but as such still really cheap. It brought to a close eight great years and hundreds of summer in the city gigs.

Returns & Exchanges

If you need to change size or colour or design, or just fancy a refund, it’s all cool. I can sort all of this out for you.

But, as of 8th Jan 2024 we have had to introduce a handling fee of £5 for returns, which will be deducted from your refund.
All our shirts are printed to order, so it means we have a lot of wasted stock when we make a size exchange, or if someone orders two sizes in order to return one.
Please note, you will also need to pay your own return shipping.

So before ordering - please measure your size and choose correctly -  see size chart

When returning an item it must arrive with us in it’s original condition. Wearing it down the pub on a Friday night out, getting it covered in Guinness and setting light to it via a badly rolled reefer, then returning it on Monday, is understandable, but not allowed by the karma pixies who govern our lives. And we don't want to upset the karma pixies now, do we?

If your item is in any way faulty then please contact me immediately, send a photo of the issue and I will get a replacement organised. For clarity, the concept of faulty does not include stains from a lamb dhansak you have spilled down yourself after consuming 8 pints of lager.  For faulty items there will be no return fee.

Before making a return, please email me with your order number, and what you want to happen - a refund, or a different size/colour/design. I can then make it happen because I am all powerful, can change my clothes in a phone box and can fire spider webs from places I didn't know I even had. Possibly.

You will always be dealing with me, Johnny, because DJTees is so small and niche that I do all admin. Don't worry, I don't bite, or at least not unless you are a sausage. I do bite sausages.

If you'd love a t-shirt but are totally skint, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do.

We print everything to order and don't hold any stock of anything. That would be mad. Almost all orders are printed within 2 or 3 working days (this doesn't include weekends and public holidays), occasionally as long as 4 days if we have run out of a size or colour t-shirt and stock is delayed in arriving.
