We’re closing in on moving day but hold ups caused by solicitors and various other bodies might delay it a few days. It’s a tense time, I must say. Large volumes of stuff have gone but an even larger amount remains. In the process of expunging everything, we’ve unearthed some promo items given to us by Google in 2005/6 for being a big adwords spender (we don’t use it now).
It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago. One is a mouse and usb set, the other is a multicoloured light box/radio. I’m told some people collect these as early Google products. I don’t know about you but it’s hard to think of something so ‘new’ might have a retro cache. It seems thing 20 years old should come from the 1940’s or 50s.
It's the same with a box of 4 or 5 20/22 year-old pre iPhone phones and cameras. All unused for decades but apparently desired as retro items. As I can’t be bothered to try and charge everything and test them, I think we’ll sell as a job lot for parts for £80. I found a deck of cards from the mid 70s and a newspaper cutting from when I caught Jack Newton’s golf ball, runner-up of the 1975 Open Golf Championship. So if you ever see him sink the final putt, turn and throw the ball into the stand, it was me who caught it. My mam rang up the Evening Gazette and got them to come around and the story got in the paper in an ‘unusual-thing-happens-to-local-boy sort of way. I look so young. What happened to that 14 year-old kid? I was about to turn 15 and my interest in Deep Purple, acid rock and West Coast bands was peaking, though I hardly look like the freakiest kid.
To see yourself when you were young is unsettling somehow. I suppose it reminds you of your mortality. All those days since July 1975, I lived every one. It barely seems believable. Little did I know what was coming, within 5 years I’d met Dawn and perhaps inevitably it involved living in California for a year just 18 years later but I couldn’t have imagined that was even possible at the time. Wish it was still 1975.
